As babies come in all shapes and sizes, buying a gift can be a bit daunting. Some retailers like to sell by age, but any mum will tell you that a newborn weighing 6lbs will take a different size outfit to one weighing 10lbs, even if they are both born on the same day. Babies grow at different rates too. At three months a small baby can still be in newborn clothes, whilst a rather more chubby one will be in 3 - 6 month sizes.
If this is the first baby you are buying for it's hard to decide what a baby actually needs. It's very easy to buy toys for children, but a little one has very different needs. The only thing you can be certain of is a baby will grow. And grow.
A baby can wear a sleepsuit that is a bit too big, so it is always wise to buy a larger size than just 'newborn'. And, if you buy 12-18 month size, which is something that many people do not think of doing, you're going to be giving the new mum something that she doesn't already have but you know will come in very handy. Obviously it depends on the season as to the type of clothes you buy, but all babies need to be warm so all in one suits are an ideal choice.
If you really don't want to make a guess at baby's size, or don't happen to have a tapemeasure handy when you visit, then the answer is to go for the basic essentials. Packs of nappies in different sizes might not seem a very exciting present but they are the most essential thing a baby needs.
Wrapped up with lots of love, any present will be welcomed by the new parents
