On a cold winter's day we all love to be in front of a fire, or snuggled up with a hot water bottle, but babies don't have that luxury. They are unable to tell you when they are too cold and a cry or scream can mean many different things.
As a general rule a baby should have one more layer of clothing than you are wearing. You can always keep warm by moving around or exercising, but a newborn often lies in his cot in the same position for hours, so you need to keep an eye on baby's temperature. Do not feel baby's hands and feet to check his temperature as these can feel cold even if he is not. A good suggestion is to feel your baby's neck or the small of the back. If these spots are cold to the touch, your baby is probably too cool. If they are warm and sweating, your baby could be too warm. If in any doubt, always consult your midwife or doctor. Babies can lose body heat rapidly and it is better to seem like a fussy mother than someone who doesn't care.
When you take baby outside always cover his head with a hat and make sure he has socks or bootees to keep his tootsies warm. An all in one romper or sleepsuit is ideal as there won't be any gaps for the cold air to hit baby's skin. A rolled up blanket kept in a carrier bag won't take up much space but is handy to have if the weather changes whist you are out.
Kimono style clothes are brilliant for fussy babies and genuine Japanese baby items are available in our Fun, Modern Baby Clothes section.
Whenever possible try and dress baby in natural fibres like wool, cotton, bamboo or soya. Organic cotton is very popular and comes in a gorgeous choice of muted shades, ideal for a new baby. These fibres will allow the baby to perspire and are so soft against new skin.
Just remember, if baby is comfortable he will be happy and so will you !!

Buying baby clothes and presents
Choosing a gift for a baby can be a really fun way to spend a few hours. There are so many cute, funky, modern and traditional clothes available and in price ranges to suit every budget.
Babies (and children) are very expensive items on the household budget, so many mums will appreciate a more expensive or luxurious item that they wouldn't dream of buying themselves. Organic baby clothes are gorgeous and feel so soft and smooth against new skin. A cardigan hand knitted in cashmere will be something a mum can treasure, just be sure to buy a size bigger than newborn, or baby won't be able to wear it for long.
If you would rather not guess at sizes you could always offer to pay for a set of professional photographs. New parents and grandparents always have a camera handy, but a professional sitting gives mum the chance to dress baby up in her finest, and is a good reason for her to get her best clothes on as well. Another new idea is to buy a casting kit, which allows you to take a mould of baby's hand and feet. There are several craft websites that offer the option to have baby's fingerprint set into a silver pendant, something mum can keep close to her heart.
If these are out of your budget you could always buy packs of nappies in different sizes. This might not seem a very exciting present but they are the most essential thing a baby needs ( next to doting parents and grandparents of course). An ordinary cardboard box can be lined with pretty paper and filled with inexpensive items, but the fact you have gone to the trouble to make it will mean a lot to a new mum.

Choosing a gift for a new baby
As babies come in all shapes and sizes, buying a gift can be a bit daunting. Some retailers like to sell by age, but any mum will tell you that a newborn weighing 6lbs will take a different size outfit to one weighing 10lbs, even if they are both born on the same day. Babies grow at different rates too. At three months a small baby can still be in newborn clothes, whilst a rather more chubby one will be in 3 - 6 month sizes.
If this is the first baby you are buying for it's hard to decide what a baby actually needs. It's very easy to buy toys for children, but a little one has very different needs. The only thing you can be certain of is a baby will grow. And grow.
A baby can wear a sleepsuit that is a bit too big, so it is always wise to buy a larger size than just 'newborn'. And, if you buy 12-18 month size, which is something that many people do not think of doing, you're going to be giving the new mum something that she doesn't already have but you know will come in very handy. Obviously it depends on the season as to the type of clothes you buy, but all babies need to be warm so all in one suits are an ideal choice.
If you really don't want to make a guess at baby's size, or don't happen to have a tapemeasure handy when you visit, then the answer is to go for the basic essentials. Packs of nappies in different sizes might not seem a very exciting present but they are the most essential thing a baby needs.
Wrapped up with lots of love, any present will be welcomed by the new parents
